Pfahlbaumuseum Unteruhldingen
Germany's oldest archaeological open-air museum, with 23 reconstructed Stone Age and Bronze Age pile dwellings in Lake Constance.
Om museet
The museum grew out of a citizens' initiative: in March 1922, residents of Unteruhldingen led by mayor Georg Sulger founded the Verein für Pfahlbau- und Heimatkunde (Association for Pile Dwelling Studies and Local History), which still runs the museum today. The first two reconstructed houses in the lake opened that same summer – as an open-air museum that was also meant to boost the young tourism industry on Lake Constance. In the early 1930s a Bronze Age village based on finds from the Federsee bog was added, and visitor numbers rose rapidly.
During the Nazi era, the museum came under the influence of the regime's cultural policy; the prehistorian Hans Reinerth became its director, took over the leadership again after the war, and in 1954 founded a research institute on site. The museum has since critically examined this tainted period itself.
Under Gunter Schöbel, a fundamental reconception began in 1990: in 1996 a museum building for exhibitions, administration, and research was built, and in 2002 a new Bronze Age village based on excavation findings from Unteruhldingen itself. Since 2011 the prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps – including sites on Lake Constance – have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In June 2024 the "Neues Museum am See" (New Museum on the Lake) opened, a multi-award-winning timber building more than twelve meters high that serves as a visitor center and exhibition hall for original finds. Today the complex comprises 23 pile dwellings and, with up to 300,000 visitors a year, is one of the most visited archaeological open-air museums in Europe.
