Om museet
The museum in Niederschmiedeberg, a district of Großrückerswalde, lies directly on the Preßnitz river and is itself housed in a former cardboard factory. The exhibition gives an overview of the economic and cultural history of the Preßnitz valley region, which extends across Saxony and Bohemia. Miners were already extracting iron and magnetite here in the 16th century, which was processed in forges and smelting works; later, water power drove cardboard factories. Further topics include the building trades, forestry and hunting, and the Preßnitz valley railway, on which goods and people traveled.
Ore Mountain folk art includes wood carvings and bobbin lace, a large horse-drawn wagon for tree trunks, a multi-tiered pyramid, and the Heimatberg (home mountain), which members of the carving club built in the 1950s and 1960s with many moving parts.
In the rear part, the exhibition commemorates refrigerator production in the village: from the mid-1950s onward, cooling units made in Niederschmiedeberg were sold worldwide until the company closed in 2001. According to the museum, CFC-free refrigerators were also developed here. The entrance hall traditionally shows changing exhibitions.
