Om museet

The impetus for the Wertingen radio museum came from the collector Heinz Hippele of Geratshofen, who donated his tube radios and records to the town of Wertingen. Shortly afterwards the family of the Meitingen collector Hans Wald gave the town around 160 more radios from the 1920s to the 1940s. After the rooms on the second floor of the former vocational and music school on Fèrestraße were prepared, the exhibition opened in 2012. Today it also includes the collection of the Augsburg collector Heinz Maxzin with tube radios and radio detectors.

Since January 2015 a telephone museum has complemented the house. Its core is a long-term loan from the Postlerhütte Augsburg, a circle of former Telekom employees. On around 64 square meters it shows the development of telecommunications technology, from the oldest device from 1898 and a cylinder telephone by Siemens & Halske to Morse apparatus, coin-operated telephones, teleprinters and rotary selectors, up to the yellow phone booth.

The radio collection now comprises several hundred devices: tube radios from the 1920s onward, crystal receivers, gramophones, radio-phonograph consoles, jukeboxes, tape recorders and records from shellac to vinyl. Most of the devices still work. The museum is run by volunteer radio and television technicians and collectors, who also give talks. On opening days, the museum's own local transmitter broadcasts a program on medium wave 801 kHz that can be heard with the receivers on display.
