Om museet
The museum's roots go back to 1844, when citizens of Hildesheim founded a museum association; its actual founder is considered to be the lawyer, senator, and geologist Hermann Roemer. The early collections of natural history, cultural history, and ethnology were displayed in the converted Martinikirche (St. Martin's Church) and the neighboring orphanage. After Roemer traveled to Egypt in 1870, a first "Egyptian Room" was created.
The museum's international reputation was established by Wilhelm Pelizaeus, a Hildesheim native who lived in Cairo as a merchant and consul. He financed excavations, above all at the pyramid field of Giza, donated his collection to his hometown in 1907, and thus made possible the opening of the Pelizaeus-Museum in 1911. Since then, Hildesheim has held the second-largest Egyptian collection in Germany after Berlin, with a focus on the Old Kingdom. In 1927, Ernst Ohlmer's collection of Chinese porcelain was added.
A new building Am Steine was constructed from 1998 to 2000; since then, the museum has operated as a non-profit company with subsidies from the city of Hildesheim. Particularly under Arne Eggebrecht, the museum made a name for itself with major special exhibitions that drew international attention.
Since 2023, Lara Weiss has directed the RPM, which is to develop into a family-friendly multidisciplinary museum that links cultural and natural history more closely. The first step was the completely redesigned permanent Egyptian exhibition, which opened in December 2025; alongside it, the exhibition "Es ist angerichtet" presents city history and ethnology. Following a break-in in 2023, some objects can only be seen as photographs for security reasons. A permanent natural history exhibition on evolution is in preparation.
