Museum at Hildesheim Cathedral with the cathedral treasury (UNESCO World Heritage), medieval art and special exhibitions beside the cloister and its famous rosebush.
The first exhibition on paw, claw and dragon feet on medieval candlesticks, portable altars and vessels – with pieces from the cathedral treasury and the Paderborn portable altar, on loan for the first time.
Om museet
Even the medieval cathedral had treasure chambers where reliquaries and altar vessels were kept and shown to distinguished guests. In the 19th century the holdings grew through purchases and donations from secularized monasteries and collegiate foundations; Bishop Eduard Jakob Wedekin eventually initiated the founding of a diocesan museum, from which today's Dommuseum emerged.
When the cathedral was destroyed on March 22, 1945, the collection rooms were lost, but the most important pieces had been moved to safety in time. From 1960 the cathedral treasury was again on view in a treasure chamber above the sacristy; in 1978 rooms in the former chapter house were added, and from 1988 the museum regularly staged acclaimed special exhibitions. In 1985 the cathedral and its treasury were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
During the cathedral's renovation the museum was closed from 2010; major works were lent to institutions including the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Bode-Museum in Berlin. In April 2015 the Dommuseum reopened with considerably more space, closely linked to the cathedral, the medieval cloister and the Thousand-Year Rosebush (Tausendjähriger Rosenstock), and in the same year received the museum prize of the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung.
Today the museum of the Diocese of Hildesheim presents the cathedral treasury and other holdings in a permanent exhibition, complemented by special exhibitions and projects on the transcultural connections of medieval art.
