Om museet
The Frisch Glück mine is first mentioned in 1688 in the records of the Annaberg mining office as a silver and pyrite mine. From 1705 on, galleries were driven and silver, copper, lead and zinc blende were extracted. Operations ran with interruptions, and in 1830 the state helped restart the mine with a startup subsidy. From 1855 on, "Herkules" and "Frisch-Glück" were named together; in 1906 the two mines were merged, and marble was quarried on a large scale until 1916.
The mine was struck from the mining office records in 1921, yet as early as 1926 the Erzgebirge tourism association opened the first training and show mine in Saxony here. Visitor operations were suspended from 1939; after 1945 the SAG Wismut explored the mine for uranium ore. Mining trainees from the Wismut vocational school in Schlema reconstructed it between 1964 and 1966, and guided tours have been offered again since 1966 – the longest continuous period of operation to date.
After descending roughly 250 steps, visitors reach two marble halls and underground lakes at a depth of 80 meters; under UV light, scheelite and other minerals glow. Above ground, the Bergmännische Erlebniswelt (miners' experience area) complements the tour with a stamp mill, ore washery, bloomery furnace, miners' forge and a miner's house inaugurated in 2022. The mine is part of the Erzgebirge mining region and is operated by the town of Grünhain-Beierfeld.
