Om museet

The Silberwäsche is located in the Halsbach valley in Antonsthal, a district of Breitenbrunn in the Ore Mountains. In the surroundings, the mine "Unverhofft Glück an der Achten" extracted silver and other ores. To process the rock that was mined, a stamp mill was built in 1828, from which today's museum grew. The building is a listed monument.

The installation shows how ore was processed some 180 years ago. An overshot water wheel four meters in diameter drives an eight-meter-long camshaft, which moves 15 stamps and crushes the ore-bearing rock. At the sorting bench, visitors can try the manual work of ore sorting themselves. There are also historical hand tools, mining equipment and minerals.

The museum is looked after by the local heritage association "Silberwäsche". Upstairs, in the former Steigerstube (mine foremen's room), are the association's rooms, which can also be rented for private celebrations. There is a playground on the grounds.
