Special exhibition in the New Wing on the art of dessert at European courts in the 18th and 19th centuries – with confectioners' tools, display vessels, and three historically laid dessert tables in the banqueting halls.
Om museet
It all began with a summer house that Elector Friedrich III had built from 1695 for his consort Sophie Charlotte near the village of Lietzow – the Lietzenburg, begun to plans by Johann Arnold Nering. After Friedrich crowned himself the first King in Prussia in 1701, Johann Friedrich Eosander expanded the house into a stately residence with a domed tower and the Great Orangery. When the art-loving queen died in 1705, the palace and the settlement were named Charlottenburg in her honor.
From 1740, Frederick the Great had Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff build the New Wing, whose banqueting halls – the White Hall and the Golden Gallery – rank among the most splendid interiors of the Rococo. His successor Friedrich Wilhelm II added the theater building by Carl Gotthard Langhans and the Belvedere in the park by 1791. Seven generations of Hohenzollerns lived in and altered the palace, so it reflects the changing tastes of the court from the Baroque to the early 20th century – right up to Schinkel's New Pavilion and the mausoleum for Queen Luise in the palace garden.
Badly damaged in World War II, the complex was rebuilt and refurnished from the 1950s onward. Since 1995 the Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin-Brandenburg (Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation) has managed the ensemble. Today it presents the Baroque state apartments with the Porcelain Cabinet and palace chapel, the rooms of Frederick the Great with one of the largest collections of 18th-century French painting outside France, and permanent exhibitions on the Hohenzollern dynasty and its silver vault.
