Om museet
Schillingsfürst is first mentioned in a charter of Emperor Otto III in the year 1000. Around 1260 the castle passed to the related Hohenlohe family; over the centuries it was destroyed and rebuilt several times, for example after the Peasants' War of 1525. The Hohenlohe line of Schillingsfürst has existed since 1615.
The present palace was built between 1705 and 1740, largely to plans by Louis Remy de la Fosse: a three-story, three-winged complex with a forecourt and a double moat. The site includes a farm estate, a court garden with the family mausoleum, and the former court bakery.
The palace museum shows the staircase, the west corridor, several salons, the dining room and the study of Prince Chlodwig zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst (1819–1901), who was Bavarian prime minister and later Reich chancellor; the study has remained unchanged since 1901. Original furniture, tableware, paintings and uniforms illustrate princely life in the Baroque period and afterward. A room is devoted to the composer Franz Liszt, who was a frequent guest; there are also a museum on the French Foreign Legion and a hunting and falconry museum.
