Schulmuseum – Werkstatt für Schulgeschichte Leipzig
Municipal museum on Leipzig's school and education history with historic classrooms and reenacted lessons – free admission.
Om museet
The idea of a Leipzig school museum goes back to 1909: an association around the educator Max Brahn explicitly wanted to create a living museum, but the First World War ended the beginnings in an elementary school classroom. Brahn, later the target of antisemitic hostility, was murdered in Auschwitz in 1944.
The museum was re-founded in 1984, at first in a classroom in Lindenau, from 1994 in a school at Floßplatz. Its orientation at the time was strongly ideological. Only after 1998 did the city of Leipzig initiate a reorientation in content and personnel. Since 2000, the museum has been located at Goerdelerring in a listed hall annex of 1957, the first Stasi (State Security) building in Leipzig. It is run by the city in cooperation with Leipzig University and the HTWK and sees itself as a museum and learning workshop at the same time.
The permanent exhibitions span about 800 years: from the Ratsfreischule, the first municipal elementary school, through a classroom around 1900, the forest school, and the Jewish Carlebach School to school under National Socialism, the youth resistance of the Leipzig Meuten, everyday school life in East Germany, and the upheavals after 1989/90. Visible storage areas with school wall charts and objects from East German schools, a physics and chemistry cabinet of curiosities, a natural history teaching-materials room, and a small planetarium from 1957 complete the tour. The museum is known for its reenacted lessons from the imperial era and East Germany.
