Strigel-Museum
Late Gothic painting and sculpture by Memmingen's Strigel family of artists in the Antonierhaus, together with the Antoniter-Museum – free admission.
Om museet
The Antonierhaus in Memmingen's old town was the house of the Antonine Order, a hospital order that specialized in caring for people with “St. Anthony's fire” – a poisoning caused by ergot in grain. The order was based in Memmingen from 1214 to 1562; the four-wing complex that survives today was built in the second half of the 15th century under the preceptor Petrus Mitte de Caprariis and combined a sick ward, chapel, living quarters, and service rooms.
After the Reformation, the complex passed to the city, served as a parsonage and at times as barracks, and later came into private hands, where it fell increasingly into disrepair. Only a citizens' initiative ensured that the building – today the best-preserved Antonine complex of its kind – was saved and restored over about twelve years. Since 1996 it has housed the city library, a café, the Antoniersaal for events, and two municipal museums.
The Strigel-Museum took over holdings previously shown in the city museum in the Hermansbau. Its focus is the Strigel family of artists, who created late Gothic altarpieces, sculptures, and portraits in the Free Imperial City between about 1430 and 1528. The best-known member is Bernhard Strigel, who worked as a portrait painter for Emperor Maximilian I. Besides the works themselves, the exhibition also sheds light on how the workshops operated and on the artists' role in society.
In the same building, the Antoniter-Museum tells the story of the order, the disease of ergotism, and everyday life in a late medieval hospital, all in the original rooms.
