The exhibition in the Alter Pfarrhof (old parsonage farm) explores Thuringia as a land of toys, from home-based work to factory production, with pieces from the museum's collection.
The Thüringer Freilichtmuseum Hohenfelden was founded in 1979; its first director was the settlement researcher Hartmut Wenzel. The aim was to preserve Thuringia's rural building and living culture before the old farmhouses, craft workshops, and outbuildings disappeared from the villages.
The museum consists of two sites. In the listed village of Hohenfelden, several buildings have been preserved in their original locations and restored, including the parsonage farm with the former parsonage, the one-room school, a day laborer's house, and one of the last village brewhouses in Thuringia. On the museum grounds at the Eichenberg, a few hundred meters north of the village, buildings from various parts of the state are instead dismantled and faithfully re-erected – such as the farmstead of well-to-do farmers, a village smithy, a post windmill, an Umgebindehaus (a half-timbered house with a distinctive timber support frame), a pottery, and a shepherd's house.
The buildings range from the 16th century to the 1960s. Cottage gardens, fields, and old livestock breeds show the houses in their natural setting, while furniture and tools convey the everyday life of their inhabitants. The Eichenberg grounds are continually being expanded with additional houses.
The museum is run by the Weimarer Land district, supported by a friends' association. Besides special exhibitions, the annual program features festivals such as the Handwerkertag (Craftsmen's Day), the Thüringer Schäfertag (Thuringian Shepherds' Day), a cheese market, and an autumn market, as well as craft demonstrations and hands-on activities for children.

One ticket is valid for both museum sites. Tickets only at the museum ticket desk; gift vouchers available. Guided tours plus admission: standard tour for adults (max. 90 minutes, up to 25 people) €45 per group, children's tour (approx. 60 minutes, up to 25 children aged 6–16) €30 per group, children's adventure tour up to grade 6 (minimum 10 children) €3 per child, special themed tour €85.
The historic buildings are only partially accessible (raised door thresholds, non-standard steps, varying doorway heights); the grounds are uneven in places. Information under the “Reisen für Alle” (Travel for All) certification system (short reports) is available.

Children's tours (approx. 60 min., ages 6–12) and adventure tours for elementary school children with hands-on themes such as butter making, laundry day, or village school (by registration). From April to October, hands-on activities during the craft demonstrations, as well as Sunday and holiday activities for families. The open-air grounds are mostly stroller-friendly; some historic buildings have steps and narrow doors. Baby changing room and playground at the Am Eichenberg museum site.
Regional bus; the stop is about 150 m from the Alter Pfarrhof and about 1.4 km from the Am Eichenberg museum site.

Free parking in the immediate vicinity of both museum sites; at Eichenberg also bus parking and an e-bike charging station.
Lemonade pavilion at Eichenberg and the museum restaurant "Einkehr zur alten Pfarre" in the village. Dogs on a leash welcome; smoking is prohibited throughout the grounds.
