Om museet
The collector Manfred Bumiller acquired the property at Austraße 29 in Bamberg's old town in 1992 and had it renovated over two years. In 1995 the “Museum für Frühislamische Kunst” (Museum of Early Islamic Art) opened here. Bumiller chose Bamberg so that his collection could be made permanently available for teaching and research together with the university's Institute of Oriental Studies. The “Haus zum Benedikt” goes back to a house first mentioned in 1321; it was rebuilt after a fire in 1584, given Baroque furnishings in the 18th century, and for a long time housed a bakery.
In 2007 the museum was extended to its third floor and to the attics of the neighboring house at Austraße 27, which serve as a walk-in display storage area. In total, around 400 square meters of exhibition space are available.
The collection consists mainly of metal objects from the 7th to 13th centuries from the Iranian region, including around 4,000 bronzes, along with about 500 ceramics, 500 glass objects, 300 coins and 200 stone objects. It is organized serially so that the development of everyday utensils can be traced. The acquisition of further objects was discontinued in 2015. A separate room displays the survey ceramics of the Luschey Collection.
