wArtehalle
Art museum in a bus shelter of about 10 m² in Welchenhausen – changing exhibitions from the tri-border region, freely accessible around the clock.
Om museet
In Welchenhausen, a small district of Lützkampen in the tri-border area with Belgium and Luxembourg, a newly built bus shelter that was hardly used stood there in 2002. The teacher Bernd Kersting suggested using it for art; local mayor Leonie Simons and the villagers joined in. The initiative gave rise to the Museumsverein wArtehalle Welchenhausen e. V. (museum association), to which the municipality permanently left the shelter.
Through community work, walls were moved and lighting, benches, and a lectern for the guest book were installed, and later a parking lot was also built. The first exhibition opened in the summer of 2002. Since then, the wArtehalle has shown several changing exhibitions a year on about ten square meters – by now over 90 – primarily with artists from Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg. The shelter has no door, is open around the clock, and continues to serve as a bus stop; a shed next door was roofed over for openings.
The association sees its work as cross-border: it took part in the Luxembourg 2007 Capital of Culture year, had the sculptures "Grenzrosen" (Border Roses) erected with young people from three countries, and hosted a symposium in Burg-Reuland in 2016. Along the road to Stupbach, the KultOurtal-Straße was created with about 25 artworks and cultural monuments; in the former fire hose house in Stupbach, the association also shows exhibitions on regional topics.
