Om museet

A first collection on local history was created in 1978 in two small rooms of the town hall, but it was largely forgotten. Only after the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein (local history association) was founded in 1987 did the search for a suitable house begin. The school building of 1881 that was first considered fell through because parts of it collapsed.

Manufacturer and honorary citizen Karl Mayer then gave the town his parental home, on the condition that a museum be set up in it. After lengthy conversion work to plans by architect Gerald Marx, the house opened on October 3, 1992. The concept understands the museum as a “Werkstatt” (workshop): exhibitions are not meant to stay fixed but are continuously developed further.

In the residential house, several rooms present the permanent exhibition: the former Hengster nature reserve, local church history, finds from prehistory and early history, and the Burg im Hain. One focus is leather goods production as home work, with a faithfully furnished wallet-maker's workshop. In addition, rotating displays of the Deutsche Spitzengilde (German lace guild) are shown, as well as an exhibition on genealogy in the stairwell. Karl Mayer's first workshop stands as a small shed on the property.
