Om museet
The tower windmill in Breberen was built in 1842. It is a Dutch-style mill (Holländer) with a wind rose and Bilau-style ventikant sails (Ventikantenflügel), a design with adjustable metal flaps that regulate the rotation speed. Because of these sails, the mill was listed as a technical monument in 1986.
Milling operations ended in 1919, resumed in 1937, and were permanently discontinued in 1961. In 1964 the Kreis Heinsberg took over the building as a museum mill; in 2006 it passed to the municipality of Gangelt. Since then the association Historische Mühlen im Selfkant has looked after the mill; between 2020 and 2022, among other work, the sail cross, the roof sealing, and the wooden beam ceiling were restored.
Today the mill is fully functional and is usually set in motion on Saturday afternoons, generally idling. It is only used for grinding on special occasions such as the German Mill Day (Deutscher Mühlentag) and the Open Monument Day (Tag des offenen Denkmals). The mill is a stop on the Selfkant Mill Road, a cycling route of about 25 kilometers between the historic mills of the region.
