Om museet

The Bauernmuseum Selfkant is located in the Tüddern district of the municipality of Selfkant in the Heinsberg district. It is run by the association Bauernmuseum Selfkant e. V., which opens the museum on Sundays from April to October and welcomes groups all year round.

In an exhibition hall of around 2,000 square metres, the rural work of earlier generations comes to life: about 20 tractors from various manufacturers stand alongside threshing machines, mills, ploughs, harrows and other equipment for sowing and fieldwork. Several fully furnished workshops – a village smithy, a cobbler's, a basket-maker's, a clog-maker's and a wheelwright's workshop whose machines run on a transmission – illustrate rural crafts. The showpiece is a large steam engine from around 1900; it and many other machines can be set in motion at the push of a button.

On the gallery, a farmhouse kitchen, a living room, a bedroom and a wash house have been set up. In front of the museum stands the "Alte Backes", a bakehouse that is still fired with bundles of brushwood on special occasions. Known beyond the region is the vintage car and tractor meeting with a craft market, held every two years at Whitsun, at which bread and Selfkantfla are baked in the bakehouse.
