Om museet

The Wixhäuser Dorfmuseum belongs to the Protestant parish of Wixhausen, the northernmost district of Darmstadt. It is housed in a Franconian half-timbered house from the 17th century, right next to the church. In 1980 the parish set up the museum on the initiative of the pastor at the time, Hans-Eberhardt Ruhl; the house was restored at great expense, with a great deal of volunteer work and church tax funds.

The furnishings come from Wixhausen residents, who contributed mementos from the family and working life of earlier times. The museum shows everyday life in the 18th and 19th centuries in three demonstration workshops, as well as through household objects, toys and photographs. To this day, the house is maintained by volunteers and presented to visitors.

The museum includes a courtyard with a barn and a bread oven. Several events take place there each year, such as "Back und Schnack", where guests bake bread, pizza, Flammkuchen and cake in the museum's bread oven; the opening on Kerb Sunday (the village fair); and the Apfelfest, a family festival. Guided tours of the entire church complex, including the museum, are also offered.
