Ongoing exhibition series in which staff members offer personal insights into the museum's collection and research.
The museum's roots go back to 1843, when a natural history museum was founded in Hamburg at the initiative of the Naturwissenschaftlicher Verein (natural science society). The following year, society members and school classes could already see the first exhibitions in what was then the Johanneum on Speersort. From 1891 the collection occupied an imposing new building near the main train station.
The museum building was destroyed in the air raids of summer 1943; only parts of the holdings survived the war. In 1969 the collections passed to the University of Hamburg, which continued them on the Bundesstraße campus, where it presented exhibition collections for zoology, mineralogy, and geology-paleontology.
In 2016 the university's natural history institutions were merged into the Centrum für Naturkunde and the exhibitions were reorganized. In 2021 came the merger with the Museum Koenig in Bonn to form the Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change (LIB); since then the Hamburg exhibitions have operated as the Museum der Natur Hamburg.
The zoological exhibition shows a small selection from some ten million collection objects and focuses on biodiversity and the threats it faces. In the long term, the Hamburg exhibitions are to become part of a new research museum, the Evolutioneum in HafenCity.
