About the museum
The Alte Hofmühle in Güssing was built as a mill towards the end of the 18th century and is now a listed building. The building houses two small museums under one roof.
The Emigrant Museum commemorates the great emigration from Burgenland to America at the beginning of the 20th century – from the Güssing district alone, more than 9,000 people left their homeland for America. Personal items, pictures and documents tell of the departure and of the life of Burgenlanders in the new world. The house is closely linked with the Burgenländische Gemeinschaft, which has maintained contacts with emigrated Burgenlanders and their descendants since 1956.
The second part is dedicated to the Güssing dialect poet Josef Reichl (1860–1924), who described the life of the people in the border region in his texts and thereby also recorded the background to the emigration.
