About the museum

The museum goes back to retired master joiner Georg Bruckner. For about 45 years he collected woodworking tools so that young craftsmen could see what was once used to make high-quality furniture. Over the decades more than 3,000 exhibits came together, many of them gifts from friends – including a hand drill from 1840.

The collection is housed in a former inn in the middle of Sankt Kathrein, a district of Deutsch Schützen-Eisenberg. It documents about 200 years of history of woodworking tools and is considered the largest of its kind in Burgenland. Each woodworking trade, such as cooper or joiner, has its own room; a special feature is a tool catalog from 1895.

The museum also presents 40 native wood species that have been used for centuries in buildings, furniture, tools and implements, and explains how a piece of wood becomes furniture, wine barrels, carriages or musical instruments.
