About the museum
The idea for the museum came from the retired machinery dealer Josef Matisovits, who in 1993 presented the then provincial governor Karl Stix with a plan to preserve old agricultural equipment in St. Michael as cultural heritage for the future. The project met with approval, and interested people founded the association “Historische Landmaschinen Burgenland”, which remains the museum's operator to this day.
The building was adapted, and at the same time the search for suitable exhibits began. Many machines were found dusty or overgrown, such as a steam engine that had stood outdoors in the Waldviertel for about 25 years; they were laboriously dismantled and restored. The museum opened on 8 April 1995.
Today it shows about 200 years of agricultural technology, from the sickle to the combine harvester, on more than 2,700 square metres of covered exhibition space. The sections range from crafts, household and traditional costume through arable farming, harvest and grassland to fruit and wine growing, tractors, stationary engines and model making. In 2001 the Federal Monuments Office placed 75 exhibits under heritage protection. The museum has repeatedly received the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality, most recently in 2014, and was honoured with several provincial and museum awards in the 1990s and early 2000s.
