About the museum
The Old Church of St. Bartholomä in western Styria is first mentioned in documents in 1319 and was expanded in the Gothic style in the 15th century. After the consecration of the new parish church in 1867 it fell increasingly into disrepair, until the folklorist and cultural politician Hanns Koren pushed for its safeguarding and renovation from 1975; in 1976 it reopened as a cultural venue.
Koren (1906–1985) had found his adopted home in St. Bartholomä in the early 1960s and became an honorary citizen of the municipality. In 1999 a memorial room for him was set up in the bell tower of the Old Church. After the general renovation of the church, which now belongs to the municipality, the small exhibition was redesigned by 2025 and reopened as the Hanns Koren Jahrhundertmuseum (Hanns Koren Century Museum).
More than 300 pictorial and film documents as well as objects from private ownership trace Koren's path and his century – from folklorist to politician, to whom the Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing, the Forum Stadtpark and the steirischer herbst festival can be traced back. Interviews with contemporary witnesses complement the show.
