About the museum
The Ligist local history museum was set up in 1973 with six rooms on the ground floor of the Maltese Castle, which has belonged to the Sovereign Order of Malta since 1928. The castle itself is not open as a museum today; the collection is now displayed in a house about 250 years old, a former forge in the Schmiedhiaslhammer.
Spread over seven rooms, the exhibition leads through about 6,000 years of settlement history. On view are stone axes from the 4th millennium BC, Celtic grave goods and Roman coins, as well as a model and finds from the old Ligist castle and historical photographs from the period 1880 to 1930.
A second focus is everyday life: the “gute Stube” (parlour) of the Schmiedhiasl and the elegant salon of the hammer-mill mistress Gamillschegg contrast the world of craftsmen and farmers with that of the mine owners and hammer-mill masters of the 19th century. Short videos show the handling of old tools, bobbin lace-making and the path from flax to linen.
