About the museum
Gustinus Ambrosi (1893–1975) was born in Eisenstadt and lost his hearing as a child through meningitis. Nevertheless, he created more than 2,300 sculptures in his lifetime, received the Austrian State Prize for sculpture as a young man and worked in studios in several European countries. His best-known works include portrait busts of famous contemporaries.
He had the house in Stallhofen built as a retirement home to his own ideas in the style of a Florentine villa, but never lived in it. After his death, his wife Beata carried out the plan; in 1988 the property passed into the ownership of the market municipality of Stallhofen and was opened as a museum and memorial. The older Ambrosi Museum in Vienna's Augarten no longer exists.
On display are sculptures, designs and studies from all creative periods, including the early work "The Man with the Broken Neck", "The Blossom" and "Icarus", as well as busts of well-known figures such as Rainer Maria Rilke, Stefan Zweig and several popes. On the first floor, the artist's varied collection of antiques can also be seen. The house stands in a park and at the same time gives an impression of the sculptor's world.
