About the museum

For millennia, Brixlegg was a centre of mining and smelting: finds prove a mining settlement long before the birth of Christ, and the Montanwerke, which celebrated its 550th anniversary in 2013, still shapes the region today. To preserve the old mining heritage, the association "Tiroler Bergbau- und Hüttenmuseum in Brixlegg" was founded in the late 1980s.

The museum opened in 1991 in the former elementary school building of 1876 on Römerstraße. Covering around 400 square metres, it is divided into four areas: prehistoric mining, the "golden age" of mining between about 1450 and 1600, the smelting department with smelting technology at the Montanwerk, and the Bitterlich mineral collection with around 600 mineral specimens and over 100 fossils on permanent loan. Along the staircase, an additional exhibition commemorates the Brixlegg mountaineer Hias Rebitsch and his expeditions.

The main focuses include prehistoric finds, among them the unique find complex from the Mariahilfbergl, as well as illustrations from the Schwazer Bergbuch and by Georgius Agricola, miners' lamps and tools, notched ladder logs, ore troughs and parts of a water-lifting machine. The showpiece is a Spurnagelhunt (mine cart) recovered from the Gratlspitz near Brixlegg.

The house is run by the museum association, which is also responsible for the website.
