About the museum
A few hundred metres above the small church of Inneralpbach, at the edge of the forest, stands the Vorder-Unterberg farm. Local carpenters built it between 1636 and 1638, and a farming family lived here until 1952. The house did not stand empty afterwards: in 1975 the municipality of Alpbach leased the living quarters, added to the original furnishings and the old farming tools, and opened the house to the public as a museum. The farm is still owned by the family that owns it.
The tour leads through the wood-panelled farmhouse parlour with its tiled stove, into the smoke kitchen (Rauchkuchl) with its old pots and pans, where Alpbach bacon is still smoked today, and into the bedrooms with valuable Alpbach cupboards, chests and textiles from the 18th century. A rarity is the only surviving Alpbach four-poster bed in the valley; a small house chapel is also part of the house. In all, about 800 furnishings and everyday objects are on display, including butter churns, wooden skis, hay baskets, traditional costumes and dental drills.
The house is not meant to be a dead museum: cows, chickens and pigs still live in the rear part of the stable, so that a visit also shows children vividly what everyday life on a mountain farm was like.
