About the museum
The Museum Tiroler Bauernhöfe goes back to an association founded in 1974. The impetus came from the Kramsach entrepreneur Heinz Mantl, supported by the then mayor and by the cultural department of the State of Tyrol. The background was the rapid change after the Second World War: many old farmsteads were modernised or demolished. Following the example of Scandinavian open-air museums and the Austrian Open-Air Museum in Stübing, typical farm types were to be preserved from disappearing.
On about 8.5 hectares of hilly terrain, 37 buildings have since been dismantled and rebuilt using their original components – farmhouses, barns, chapels, an alpine pasture hut, a sawmill, a mill and a school. The layout roughly follows the geography of the region, so that visitors on the circular trail encounter farmsteads from the Lower Inn Valley, the Upper Inn Valley, East Tyrol and South Tyrol in turn. The oldest buildings date back to the late Middle Ages.
In collaboration with Atelier Brückner, the interpretation was renewed: four thematic stations on landscape, economy, community and authority, video installations in several farmsteads, listening stations in German, English and French, and a free audio guide app complement the information panels. A permanent display commemorates log driving in the Brandenberg Valley. Since 2026 there has also been an outdoor puzzle game through the farmsteads, along with customs events, craft demonstrations and programmes for schools.
