About the museum
Anton Bruckner was born in 1824 in the schoolhouse of Ansfelden, where his father worked as a schoolteacher and the family lived. The simple building in the village centre still evokes the rural surroundings in which the future organist and symphonist grew up before he went to the nearby St. Florian Abbey as a choirboy.
In 1971 a memorial was set up in the former schoolhouse, with a tour following Bruckner's musical career. After renovation and redesign, the house reopened in 2014 as the Anton Bruckner Museum. On view are the living room, the room where he was born and a classroom, as well as the composer's personal belongings, instruments and manuscripts. A particular highlight is the original Baroque console of the organ of St. Florian, on which Bruckner played for many years.
For his 200th birthday in 2024, the permanent exhibition was revised as part of the Upper Austrian KulturEXPO and supplemented with further objects. Since then there has been a listening room where visitors can interactively navigate through some 5,000 digitised sound recordings from the 1940s to the present – according to the operator, the largest Bruckner sound archive in the world. A multimedia audio biography links the stages of his life with music, images and sound. The museum is run by OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH.
