About the museum
According to legend, a castle of the Abensperg family stood on the site of the present castle in the 11th century; a fortress is reliably documented at the beginning of the 12th century. As a “Ringmantelanlage” (ring-wall complex) with moats, it had the character of an island, as is typical of Upper Austrian moated castles. In the 16th century the castle developed into a palace, with the manor house as a rectangular Renaissance building with four corner towers; the appearance of this period is recorded in a copper engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer of 1674.
In the Baroque period, wing extensions, a new façade, stucco and the mansard roof followed. In the 19th century the building fell into disrepair, the castle pond was filled in in 1884, and rental apartments were created in the manor house. In the Second World War a crashing aircraft destroyed a corner tower; the damage was repaired in 1956/57. In 1982 the municipal council decided to revitalise the castle.
Today the castle belongs to the city of Traun and is part of the Kulturpark. In the attic, a freely accessible exhibition shows the history of the Abensperg-Traun family and the castle, while the Goldhaubengruppe (gold bonnet group) and the Heimat- und Trachtenverein (local heritage and costume association) present their development. In the “Raum der Kunst”, the city regularly presents exhibitions by the regional art scene.
