About the museum
The voestalpine Stahlwelt at the group's Linz site opened on November 7, 2009, during the "Lange Nacht der Forschung" (Long Night of Research). Since then it has welcomed around 750,000 visitors, mainly school classes, students and individual guests. It sees itself as the group's showcase and explains how steel is made and where it is used.
From July 2024 onward, the exhibition was comprehensively redesigned for around €20 million, based on plans by the Stuttgart office Atelier Brückner. The renewed exhibition area opened on June 23, 2026, and regular tours have run since July 13, 2026. Its centerpiece is the "Grid," a suspended, walkable steel structure of about 138 tons with roughly 8,500 individually controllable LED light points.
Spread across five levels, three of them within the Grid, the exhibition presents the group's business areas, from the automotive and aerospace industries through rail infrastructure to medical technology. Exhibits such as an astronaut's helmet, a surfboard and a luge sled show where steel is used everywhere. One focus is the more climate-friendly steel production ("greentec steel"). All guests receive a tablet with additional content. There is also a works tour across the plant site, family programs, and the separate ZeitgeschichteMUSEUM on Nazi-era forced labor at the Hermann Göring Works.
