About the museum

The collection goes back to the “Archäologisches Cabinet” of the University of Graz, founded in 1865, which the classical philologists Karl Schenkl and Max von Karajan brought into being together with the Germanist Karl Tomaschek. From 1868 it was displayed in a room decorated in Pompeian red in the old Jesuit university. In 1894 it moved into specially designed rooms occupying the entire west wing of the second floor of the university's main building.

The cast collection (Gipsmuseum) comprises 444 replicas of ancient sculptures and architectural elements, of which around 228 large-format pieces are permanently on display. The original collection numbers about 2,000 objects, including around 1,800 vessels and sherds, small finds, architectural fragments, and terracotta and bronze figures from the Aegean, Italy and Roman Austria. In addition there are about 1,000 squeezes of inscriptions and around 4,000 ancient coins.

Three ceramics collections acquired under questionable circumstances during the Second World War were partly returned to Greece from 2017 onwards. Large parts of the holdings have been digitally recorded and are accessible online through a virtual museum; the house serves teaching and research at the Institut für Antike.
