About the museum
The exhibition pavilion on the Burgring was built in 1952 in late modernist architecture and is considered one of the first white cubes in Austria. For decades it showed thematic exhibitions with international positions and, together with the Neue Galerie am Joanneum, was a venue of the three-country biennial Trigon, which fostered exchange with South-Eastern Europe during the Cold War. In the 1980s, close ties developed between the Graz and Cologne art scenes.
In 2013 the Kunstverein Medienturm, under the artistic direction of Sandro Droschl, took over the building, which had previously undergone a complete renovation, and ran it as an independent institution under the name Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien (KM–). From 2021 it was developed into a Kunsthalle with an international focus and, since its reorganisation, has been called HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark.
The programme combines solo and group exhibitions, performances, residencies and film evenings; regional art production is also incorporated. Since 2024 the venue has seen itself as a climate-fit cultural institution: the exhibition lighting was switched to LED and the glazed foyer received natural external shading.
