About the museum

Traunkirchen on Lake Traunsee has been known since the 19th century as a find site of the Late Bronze Age and the early Hallstatt period. The Initiative für Archäologie und Kultur, short ARCHEKULT, is dedicated to researching and communicating this history and supports scientific investigations on site.

In the municipal office on the village square, the association runs a small exhibition titled "Wege zum Salz: Traunkirchen – Salzhafen der Hallstattzeit." It tells of a natural harbor that was used between about 850 and 450 BC and played a role in the salt trade and in supplying the region.

On display are finds from graves and settlement remains, including jewelry, weapons, decorated stepped plates and the hollow-ridge rings (Hohlwulstringe) characteristic of Traunkirchen. There is also a virtual museum online, and the association offers tours of archaeologically interesting places in the village.
