About the museum
The "Egger obs Moos" farmstead in Altmünster is first documented in 1504 as an estate of the Ebenzweyer lordship and is probably much older. Around 1700 the house took on its present form when a masonry ground floor was built beneath the older log-built upper storey; in the 19th century a tiled stove and a vaulted ceiling in the entrance hall were added. The striking façade displays pseudo-sgraffito painting from three eras.
In 1995 the house was due to make way for an outbuilding. To save it, an association for the preservation of historic building culture was founded in December 1995, known since 2002 as the "Kulturverein Eggerhaus". The building was surveyed, documented, dismantled and, from 1998, rebuilt at a new site. On 16 August 2003 it opened as a museum of building and living culture.
Today the Eggerhaus presents rural building and living culture of the 17th to 19th centuries, with an entrance hall, parlour, black kitchen and the Hohe Stube (high parlour), which contains furniture from the first half of the 18th century, including early Viechtau farmhouse cupboards from 1729. The ensemble also includes the Eggerstadl, a barn that was dismantled and rebuilt here, and the Troadkasten, a granary rebuilt in 2016. An associated archive documents the rural building culture of Upper Austria, and the barn serves as an event venue.
