About the museum

Traunkirchen Convent on Lake Traunsee was founded around 1020 as a Benedictine nunnery and is regarded as the first convent for women in what is now Upper Austria. Rebuilt after a fire in 1327, it served for centuries as the mother parish for large parts of the Salzkammergut as far as Hallstatt and Aussee. The community died out during the Reformation, and in 1622 the convent passed to the Jesuit college in Passau. After another fire in 1632, the church received its Baroque furnishings. When the Jesuit order was dissolved in 1773, the property passed to the state and the convent church became a parish church.

The listed building today belongs half to the parish and half to the municipality of Traunkirchen. After renovation at the end of the 1990s, a museum was set up in 1999; the convent hall and other rooms are also used for events and seminars.

The Handicraft Museum is designed and run on a voluntary basis by the gold bonnet, headscarf and hat groups of the Gmunden district. It shows regional handicrafts and festive costumes, the development of the gold bonnet, traditional headwear and convent crafts. More than 35 different handicraft techniques are on display. The cultural trail "Via Historica" leads from the village square to the museum entrance in the convent courtyard.
