About the museum

The plot on the Obere Donaulände has been documented since the 15th century; after the introduction of the sovereign salt monopoly, a storehouse for salt from Gmunden was built here in 1562. The present three-storey building of the imperial salt office was erected in 1706. It sits on remains of the old town fortifications, has walls that are in places more than two metres thick, and Baroque groin vaults.

For the Linz09 European Capital of Culture year, the city of Linz acquired the building and had it renovated and converted for about four million euros. Historic stucco ceilings and wooden floors were preserved, and the building services were moved into a new basement. In July 2009 the studio house began operating as a cultural institution of the city.

The house offers nine studios: international fellows live and work here for up to two months each, and further studios are allocated to artists from Linz and Upper Austria. Their work is shown in the exhibition hall of about 170 square metres on the ground floor in continually changing exhibitions, complemented by talks, screenings, artist talks and studio visits.
