About the museum

The StifterHaus on Adalbert-Stifter-Platz in Linz is the former home of the poet Adalbert Stifter (1805–1868). Today it houses the Adalbert Stifter Institute of the State of Upper Austria, a research institute for literary and linguistic studies founded in 1950. Since 1993 the house has also been home to the Upper Austrian Literature House, with readings, concerts, conferences and book presentations.

That same year, the OÖ. Literaturmuseum was set up on the third floor, in Stifter's former apartment; in 2013 the presentation was completely redesigned. Five rooms are devoted, in chronological order, to themes of Upper Austrian literary history from about the year 800 to the present: "Lieben" (Minnesang), "Kämpfen" (Nibelungenlied), "Gehen" (Franz Stelzhamer), "Erinnern" (including Marlen Haushofer and Thomas Bernhard) and "Schreiben" in Stifter's former study.

The rooms feature original furniture from Stifter's estate and paintings, including loans from the OÖ. Landesmuseum, as well as the marriage bed, death sofa and two portraits of the poet from the Nordico City Museum. Works, objects and photographs by around 30 authors are shown, for example Thomas Bernhard's travel typewriter "Hermes Baby", supplemented by audiovisual stations and a digital screen wall.
