About the museum

The Linz Museum for the History of Dentistry and Dental Technology is run by an association founded in 1998 as an interest group for the history of dentistry in Upper Austria. Dentists, dental technicians, and representatives of the dental industry and dental trade work on a voluntary basis to preserve old apparatus and instruments and show them to the public. According to its own information, the museum is unique in Austria.

The museum is housed in the medieval vaults of the Old Town Hall on the Hauptplatz. Modern display cases shaped like molars, and "oral cavities" separated by transparent curtains, contrast complete practice furnishings from some 120 years. Access is via the Rathausgasse and the inner courtyard of a guesthouse.

The collection spans from a tooth key and a wooden barber-surgeon's chair from around 1700, through an upscale Old Viennese practice around 1900, to treatment units from the 1960s to the 1980s. Also shown are X-ray units, drills, anesthetics, a dental technician's workstation, dental hygiene products and examples from orthodontics. Videos on the history of dentistry complement the display.
