About the museum
The Austrian Aviation Museum grew out of the long friendship of two airline pilots who had been collecting aviation objects since their joint glider training at Spitzerberg. The idea of pooling their collections and technical knowledge led to the founding of an association in the summer of 1996. Its goal: to preserve historic aircraft and aviation artefacts and, where possible, to return machines to airworthy condition using approved procedures.
The first larger acquisitions were a North American T-6G "Texan" and a Nord 1002 "Pingouin II", which had long been displayed outdoors at Vienna Airport. Restoration was initially carried out in the former diesel power station on the brewery grounds in Schwechat, a brick hall from 1906 with its own overhead crane.
From 2008 the association moved step by step to Vöslau-Kottingbrunn airfield; by 2013 the entire collection was there. It is housed, among other places, in a Second World War bunker hangar. In 2015 the Piper Super Cub and in 2016 a Boeing Stearman received airworthiness approval, and since then the museum's vintage aircraft have been flying again. Also on display are static exhibits such as a Vickers Viking and a Saab Draken, as well as gliders and aircraft undergoing restoration.
