About the museum
The town museum is housed in Vöslau's first school building, erected in 1852. When the new Bürgerschule opened in 1893, the municipal office moved into this building from the "Hotel Communal". In 1974, the town office moved to the renovated Vöslau Palace; since then the town museum has used the building, which is therefore also called the "Old Town Hall". In 1987, the municipal library in the neighbouring house was connected to the museum by an extension, and both have shared a main entrance ever since.
The museum gives an overview of the history and development of the town with its districts of Bad Vöslau, Gainfarn and Großau. Pictures, photos, models, documents and finds tell of the spa town and the thermal baths, of Vöslau Palace and the Fries family, of Merkenstein Castle, of the craft of pitch-making (Pecherei) and of the worsted spinning mill founded in 1833. A special feature is the skeleton of the "sea cow Linda", which is around 15 million years old.
In an adjoining building, the museum also shows a wine museum, an original school classroom and a living and washing kitchen from around 1900. The director since 2003 has been the historian Silke Ebster.
