About the museum
The museum was founded on the private collection of the police officer Heinrich Zwicker in the 1950s. By around 1960 it had become a "Brigittenau local history museum" in a vocational school on Raffaelgasse, and in 1966 the museum association was formed. After an interim stop on Engerthstraße, in May 1994 the museum moved into the so-called Bertram-Schlössl at Dresdner Straße 79, a historicist villa of 1889 that once served as the company headquarters of the industrialist Friedrich Bertram and later of the telephone company Czeija, Nissl & Co.
The permanent exhibition follows the 20th district's path from floodplain to industrial and working-class district, with plans, views and models, such as the Brigittenau horse-drawn tramway and the Nordwestbahnhof from the era of passenger services. The focus is on trade and industry, transport, everyday life, the Brigitta-Kirtag fair, and the Czeija & Nissl company with the history of the telephone and broadcasting; a separate section presents Brigittenau businesses.
Since September 2024, the "Donau-Raum" in the annex has served as an interactive permanent exhibition on the regulation of the Danube and the Danube Canal and its significance for the district. In the landscaped courtyard stand large objects such as the anchor of a dredger and, since 2021, a peace bell; concerts are also held there regularly. The museum is run by volunteers and belongs to the network of Vienna's district museums.
