About the museum
The Casino Zögernitz in Döbling was built in 1837 and was a popular meeting place of Viennese society in the 19th century. The Strauss family of composers and other musicians performed here regularly; the hall is considered one of the authentic venues of Viennese ball culture.
The building was restored in historical style; marble floors, ceiling frescoes and Thonet furniture remain as witnesses of the era. The entrepreneur behind the project is considered to be Hermann Rauter. On October 25, 2023, the 198th birthday of Johann Strauss (the son), the House of Strauss opened here.
Across roughly 2,000 square meters, the house presents an audiovisual, interactive exhibition on the Strauss dynasty with media stations, LED walls and sculptures. At its center is the 350-square-meter Strauss Hall, where a roughly 15-minute multimedia show runs and concerts take place. The holdings of the Johann-Strauss-Dynastie-Museum, closed in 2020, have been incorporated into the new house.
