About the museum
Soon after the district of Favoriten was founded in 1874, people began collecting everyday objects from its various parts. The idea of a museum of its own came in 1923 from the teacher Klemens Dorn; in the 1930s two rooms were set up for it in what was then the Keplerschule. The founding date of the "Favoritner Heimatmuseum" is considered to be 28 October 1936. After the interruption of the Second World War, the museum association resumed its work.
The district's 100th anniversary in 1974 gave the impetus for a larger museum, which opened on 7 June 1979 in the Haus der Begegnung in the Olof-Palme-Hof and was later extended. The museum is run by a volunteer team and belongs to the network of Viennese district museums.
The collection ranges from the district's geological history, with fossils such as the tooth of a giant shark, to the everyday life of earlier generations, for instance in a classroom preserved in its original state. Highlights include the original sandstone figures of the Spinnerin am Kreuz, the Gothic landmark on the Wienerberg. Other themes are the Wienerberger brickworks, where in the 19th century many immigrants from Bohemia and Moravia worked under harsh conditions, as well as the Favoriten water tower.
