About the museum
Prompted by district head Otmar Hassenberger, culturally minded residents of Hietzing worked from 1949 towards a local history museum of their own. The sponsoring association was officially founded in 1951, and on 24 May 1954 the museum opened in two rooms of the district office. Thanks to numerous donations from the public, the collection grew quickly, so that in 1961 the museum was able to move into the former Volksschule at Am Platz 2 in the old village centre. The cellar and ground floor of this historicist building date back to the time before 1680. In 1971 the house was given the name Bezirksmuseum Hietzing.
Between 1998 and 2000 the City of Vienna comprehensively renovated the building and added an extension to the neighbouring school.
The exhibition presents Hietzing as a district of villas and ranges from Palaeolithic bone finds, the oldest evidence to date of human presence in the Vienna area, through the 1014/15 deed of donation of Godtinesfeld and finds from the abandoned settlement of St. Nikolai, into the 20th century. Mementos relate to Bertha von Suttner, Egon Schiele, the Villa Primavesi and the imperial house. A special feature is the estate of the Africa explorer Friedrich Julius Bieber with his Ethiopia collection.
