About the museum
The Penzing district museum was founded in 1962 and was initially given two exhibition rooms in the former district office of the municipality of Penzing, dating from 1873, at Penzinger Straße 59. It opened in November 1963 with a special exhibition on transport routes. Long-serving directors were Anton Scheiblin until 1967 and then Karl Koller until 2016. After municipal offices had left the building, the museum has had most of the building at its disposal since 1978.
Today, with over 800 square metres in 25 rooms on two floors, it is one of the largest Vienna district museums. Each of the former localities of the 14th district – Baumgarten, Breitensee, Hadersdorf-Weidlingau, Hütteldorf and Penzing – has a room of its own. Characteristic are the many original interiors: a grocer's shop, a woodcutter's hut, cooper's, glove-maker's and shoemaker's workshops, living rooms and kitchens from different eras, and a nostalgic shopping street.
Other focal points are musical instrument making with the Stelzhammer piano-maker's workshop, the development of the tram and railway with a historic ticket counter, and the natural landscape of the Wien Valley and Vienna Woods with a large relief of the district. Separate rooms commemorate Otto Wagner, Gustav Klimt and the entertainer Heinz Conrads; a lapidarium is housed on the ground floor and in the garden.
