About the museum

The museum's starting point is the research of Anton Schirmböck (1898–1982), regarded as the founder of Austrian brick research. After smaller presentations at the University of Vienna, in 1973 he was able to show his collection for the first time in a large special exhibition at the Bezirksmuseum Penzing, titled “Die Entwicklungswege der Mauerziegel” (The Development of the Masonry Brick). The success of this show led to the founding of the Wiener Ziegelmuseum in the same year.

On 20 January 1978 the museum was opened as a branch of the Bezirksmuseum Penzing at Hickelgasse 5, with the exhibition “Der Wiener Mauerziegel” (The Viennese Masonry Brick). Four years later, for lack of space, it moved to the building at Penzinger Straße 59, which also houses the Bezirksmuseum. It has existed as an independent museum since 1986; after a lengthy renovation phase it reopened in 1989 with an exhibition on the Viennese fortification brick.

Today around 13,000 objects belong to the collection: wall and roof tiles, fireclay material, mosaic tiles and stove tiles, as well as production equipment such as old brick moulds. The museum documents the existing and former brick kilns of Austria, collects their products and researches the many different brick marks. It cooperates with the Vienna City Archaeology and is a point of contact for researchers from all over the world.
