About the museum
The Bezirksmuseum Margareten is one of the youngest Vienna district museums: it was created in 1975 at the suggestion of the then District Head Johann Walter and has since been housed in the district office of the 5th district on Schönbrunner Straße, not far from the historic Margaretenplatz.
Large objects are hardly to be found here. The museum tells the district's history mainly in texts and pictures and draws on an extensive photo collection. Life stories form a focus: besides artists who became known from Margareten far beyond Austria, there are also people from all walks of life whose fate or political commitment shaped the district.
A documentation of Margareten's architecture shows the district's diverse building stock. Among the special features is a steel vault installed around 1900 for a branch of the municipal savings bank, which can be viewed; added to this are objects from a cooperage and from Anton Budil's amber workshop. The library and archive holdings can be searched via an online catalogue. The museum is run on a voluntary basis; its director is Heinrich Spitznagl.
