About the museum

In 1952 District Head Franz Ramel suggested a local history museum, which was at first housed in the then district office on Preßgasse. After the district administration moved to Favoritenstraße in 1968, smaller exhibitions took place there; the first museum director was Hans Kloser-Homma.

When the municipal public bath on Klagbaumgasse closed in 1977, a building of its own presented itself. The “Tröpferlbad” built in 1893 stands on the site of the St. Hiob zum Klagbaum infirmary, founded in the 13th century. In 1978 the museum moved into the former bath attendant's flat on the ground floor; after a general renovation from 1992 to 1995 a considerably larger display area was available. Felix Czeipek directed the museum until 2017; since then Philipp Maurer has been museum director.

In the originally preserved men's shower hall, the permanent exhibition developed together with the Wien Museum on the Tröpferlbäder and the history of health and hygiene in Vienna has been on view since 2022. A further focus is the Middle Ages in Wieden, Vienna's oldest suburb, with a Gothic Madonna figure that probably comes from the infirmary's chapel. In the lecture hall, presentations on art and culture in the district change regularly. The Vienna Chimney Sweep Museum is also located in the same building.
