About the museum
Franz Schubert spent his entire short life in Vienna. When he fell seriously ill in autumn 1828, he moved at the beginning of September into the apartment of his brother Ferdinand on the second floor of the building at Kettenbrückengasse 6 in what is now the 4th district. There he died on 19 November 1828, at the age of only 31. The two-storey Biedermeier house had been built in the same year to plans by Franz Reymund.
Late works are associated with the apartment, including the last piano sonatas and the song "Der Hirte auf dem Felsen" (The Shepherd on the Rock). In November 1869 a memorial plaque was unveiled above the front door, and the place has always been a pilgrimage site for admirers of Schubert from all over the world. The Historical Museum of the City of Vienna, today's Wien Museum, set up a memorial in the room where he died, which opened on 19 November 1954, the anniversary of his death, and was extended in 1979. The building itself was comprehensively renovated in 1986.
The exhibition in the two rooms shows Schubert's last musical sketches, historical documents surrounding his death and his last handwritten letter; a radio play complements the visit. Since 1 January 2026, the Sterbewohnung (death apartment) has been temporarily closed as a Wien Museum site.
